Bad Habit Healed

I’ve been a habitual coffee drinker since I graduated from college. Generally I drink coffee all day long. Obviously by the end of the day I’m completing worn out. I also work long hours in the city, so by the time I get home I just collapse. There seemed to be an emotional need for the coffee so while at times I wanted to quit I could not. I did try a number of times in the last several years to quit. However it was a struggle during those times and I missed drinking the coffee. So eventually I would go back to my usual ways.
I can’t say that I prayed specifically for this healing. I just got interested in the Plainfield Church and read the lesson each day and prayed regularly. I also began to receive help from a Plainfield practitioner. She asked me to work with the verse from the Bible “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.” I was told God would be working in my life to heal everything that was troubling. Then one day a few months ago I lost interest in drinking coffee at work. While I still have one cup of coffee in the morning, I completely lost the interest to have it at any other time! There were a few times when I was feeling tired and I remembered how good a cup of coffee tasted and I bought a cup of coffee. However I couldn’t drink much of it and ended up throwing it away.
I am grateful to no longer be consumed by this enslaving habit. I now know my energy comes from God and I have never felt better or freer! Other disturbing problems in my life have also been healed and what the practitioner once told me has proven true – God has been perfecting all that concerns me! She said as we sincerely grow in Science, things like bad habits, just drop away like an old outworn garment. I am grateful for all I have been learning by being a member of Plainfield – for the lessons, church services, publications, classes and practitioners. I don’t know what I would do without this kind of help.

Hair Loss Quickly Healed

I noticed that a lot of my hair was on my pillow when I woke up in the morning and there was also a significant amount that came out in my brush whenever I combed my hair. Before too long, almost all of my hair had fallen out except for a few strands in the back of my head! I was just about bald!
The appearance of this condition was quite alarming to me, as well as to my family and friends. For that reason I consulted a doctor who told me that Alopecia Nervosa, or “hair-loss,” was most likely, the result of trauma or extreme stress of some sort. I was told it could be treated by various drugs, but it would take anywhere from 8 to 12 months before the hair would grow back. My hairdresser told me basically the same thing.
I called a practitioner from the Plainfield church to help me with this condition. She lovingly agreed to pray for me and asked me to work with the Scientific Statement of Being in Science and Health. She also mentioned the verse in Luke where Jesus says that “even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” I immediately felt at peace and knew that a good God would certainly take care of this condition.
One day I joyfully noticed that my hair was growing back in! It was evenly distributed all around my head. Furthermore, only two weeks had passed since I first contacted the practitioner for help.
It is with great gratitude that I can say, in a very short time my hair has been beautifully and completely restored. It is shiny, thick and normal in every way. There was unusual and rapid growth, unlike what had been predicted by the doctor and beautician. I am just so happy for this clear demonstration of God’s love for man and that God certainly is the same….”yesterday, today and forever! I am very grateful for our independent church and for the help I received from the practitioner.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Healed

My mother had been diagnosed by a doctor with C.O.P.D. (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). She is not a Christian Scientist, and I was very concerned about her health so I decided to call a practitioner for help. The practitioner told me it was an unselfish motive to want to help my mother and she gave me this statement from Science and Health to work with “Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power.” Also , “…where prayers are mental , all may avail themselves of God as ‘a very present help in trouble.’” She told me to work with the Scientific Statement of Being by Mrs. Eddy as well.
I was very grateful when my mother soon expressed an interest in reading the Plainfield Lesson, and then a willingness to call the practitioner herself for help.
Shortly after speaking with the practitioner, my mother’s long time habit of smoking was completely healed. She stopped needing the apparatus she had been using to help her breathe, as well as the medication she had been taking. All the symptoms have abated and she is now a well woman.
I am very grateful for this healing. I now feel a strong desire to dedicate myself more wholly to the cause of Christian Science and to become more involved with the activities of this church. Thank God for Mary Baker Eddy and for our church, Independent!

Hearing Healed

Last month I was startled by a rather loud ringing in my ears and what appeared to be the loss of most of my hearing in my left ear.  I was frightened by this development, as my mother was troubled by a similar problem that began when she was around the age I’ve reached. I called a practitioner from the Plainfield Church, who assured me that my only inheritance is from God and that the definition of ears in Science and Health is “Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses , but spiritual understanding.”  She said, “We’ll know that this is going to leave you right away and that all that is really needed is a deeper understanding of God.”
The practitioner stressed the importance of reading the Lesson-Sermon every day, particularly in the morning when “your mind is like a sponge and therefore it is important to fill it with the Truth!” She reminded me of several things I hadn’t thought of in many years, including our daily prayer: “Thy kingdom come; let the reign of divine Truth, Life and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin, and may Thy word enrich the affections of all mankind and govern them.” She told me to affirm every morning that “God is the only true and perfect hearing and God is MY hearing.” A verse from that week’s lesson that “God will perfect that which concerneth me” was also extremely comforting.
The practitioner directed me to call her every morning until the problem was lifted. Within a week’s time, I am thrilled to say, my hearing was restored completely. The “ringing” had troubled me to a greater or lesser degree for a few years prior to what appeared to be hearing loss, but I had chosen to ignore it rather than deal with it. I am happy to say that since this healing I have been completely free of that nuisance.
I am so grateful for the lessons, “Healing Thoughts,” and the simple and loving approach  which characterize every aspect of the Plainfield Church. You all have given me a fresh start with Christian Science, which I had never really understood before and yet had missed for so long. I look forward to learning more, and I’m sure the search will not be confusing and frustrating as it once was, but rather “sweet, calm and buoyant with hope”!

Cancer Healed

My husband became very ill. Family members pressed us to take him to a doctor, which we did. After a thorough examination the doctor told us my husband had cancer of the mouth in the advanced stages and gave us a very dire and frightening prediction.

We left his office quite shaken up. We were both Christian Scientists and I suggested we go to our local church and find some comforting literature to read. There we found hidden in a corner and buried beneath some things a book entitled Christian Science Its “Clear Correct Teaching” and Complete Writings by Herbert W. Eustace, C. S. B.

It looked very interesting so we took it home and began studying a section called “Factors Involved in Healing”. Under that topic there was an article called “Cancer of the Liver.” As we read and studied it, my husband fell peacefully asleep. I reasoned as God is All-in-all the only cell there can be is the cell of God and that is perfect now, therefore a cancerous cell has no real existence. In the morning when my husband got up, he said he felt there was something different in his mouth. When I looked at it, I found where before, there had been a terrible picture, now his skin was pink and healthy! He had been completely healed over night by the power of God!

I am now well advanced in years. I continue to do all my own book keeping and house work. Everyone remarks at how young and active I am. I have been a member of your church for a long time. I read your lesson, subscribe to your periodicals and tune in regularly to your web-site. I am delighted with all the recent changes you have been making. This healing of my husband will always be an inspiration to me as infallible proof of the healing power of God. I am so very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for discovering Christian Science and writing our textbook Science and Health, also, for this priceless book by Herbert W. Eustace and for the wonderful good I have been receiving by being a member of your independent church.

Chronic Pneumonia Healed

For close to a year, I struggled with chronic pneumonia. It was a nightmare as I had three small children. I had no strength and nothing the doctors prescribed helped much.

I had heard of the promising healing work going on in Plainfield, and although I was not a Christian Scientist, I called a practitioner in Plainfield to see if he could help me. After relating my pitiful predicament, I was met with a quiet but convincing “That is not right.” Other comforting thoughts were given, but the declaration “That is not right” struck a chord. From that moment I experienced a quick recovery. My strength returned, and not only was I able to take care of my own children, but I also returned to my teaching job with plenty of vigor!

Collapsing Esophagus Healed

I had suffered with a swallowing problem for six years and finally, a year ago, my esophagus closed up completely and I had to go into surgery to get it opened. Since that time, I have been getting regular treatment from a doctor who would dilate my esophagus so that I could swallow and inject steroids to strengthen it. Finally, when nothing was improving, the doctor warned me that I would need an operation, and start having to use a feeding tube!

Before my next appointment, terrified of what might happen, I turned to God with all my heart, and reached out to a Christian Science practitioner in Plainfield. I was met with love and confidence that “man’s extremity was God’s opportunity.” I was given a statement by Mary Baker Eddy, “Divine Love fills every avenue, flows through every channel, removes every obstacle.”

The next day, I visited the doctor, and he treated me, but made no more mention of operation, just to return in three weeks. So relieved, I thanked the practitioner and said that I would call back before the next appointment, because I could not afford three weeks of treatment. He would have none of it, and insisted we work together until the next appointment, because healing was the important thing. I just needed to pay what I could. The next three weeks was a joyful time of studying and feeling the presence of God. The practitioner gave me, among other things, p.390-393 in Science and Health to work with.

When I returned to the doctor, he announced that I was just fine – no more need for treatment!! From the depths of hopelessness to such freedom and joy! Only God could have done it. Thank God for the faithful, strong work of the practitioner, and for Mary Baker Eddy’s Christian Science, which so apparently, when applied correctly, really heals.

I had been a doubter and negative about everything for many years, but recently I received a wake-up call! I was weak and in a lot of pain. The medical doctors had given me a verdict that I urgently needed to have my gall bladder removed because it was clogged with gall stones causing a serious infection. Furthermore, I would only have 50% chance of surviving the operation because of my particular physical condition. My aunt, who has always impressed me with her devotion to God and Christian Science, is an out-of-town member of the Plainfield Christian Science Church, Independent, and she had raved about the healing work going on there. So in a state of total helplessness, I called for Christian Science help from a practitioner in Plainfield. I was met with the most comforting assurance that “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity”, and that a loving God would not leave me comfortless. Over the next few days, the practitioner gave me things to work with like “This false sense of substance must yield to His eternal presence, and so dissolve.” (Misc. Wr.), and “I am perfect in God right now”. Each time I spoke with the practitioner I felt uplifted, and rejuvenated.

A week after first getting Christian Science help, I was playing 9 holes of golf, and when I went to the hospital for some further tests, there was no trace of the infection, and the x-rays indicated no gall stones at all!

This experience has led my wife and I to turn to God like we never have before. We joined the Plainfield Church, and have become regular attendants of the online Services coming over the internet. We read the weekly Independent Lesson-Sermon. And I am eager to leave behind my negative outlook, and cultivate this positive, healthful way of living called Christian Science.

Attention Deficit Syndrome Healed

Our daughter was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Syndrome. School authorities told us that constant medication might help with the symptoms, but there was no cure.

We asked a practitioner from Plainfield Church for prayerful help. God’s tender, constant care was abundantly shown to us. It was pointed out that the child was badly spoiled, seldom obeyed when spoken to, and expressed no love to anyone. This error had opened the door for this affliction. We were asked if we were willing to help her express the Godlike qualities of obedience and love, at all times. We agreed to do so. We began to “see her as God’s child, made in His image and likeness, obedient to the Mind that made her.” She had become quite headstrong, and used to doing things in her own time. The practitioner told us to establish principle in our home, to tell her that we were doing our best to obey God and she must, too.

I needed to learn to handle the false beliefs of motherhood. I declared that God created her, and she belonged to Him. Once I was able to see that God made her, I could separate the error from her, and love her as a child of God. A great deal of love, patience and kindness was shown to us by the practitioner.

This year, she was placed in a regular classroom, at our insistence. The Learning Specialist and psychologist told us that she would never be able to keep up with the other students. But, the practitioner prayed and we did our best to apply the truths the practitioner was teaching us. It is with tears in my eyes that I tell about her report card at the end of this year. She received A- in reading, all B’s and one C+ in Social Studies. She is now a calm, poised and loving girl.

It’s wonderful to see the healing of something that so many authorities told us was impossible. Truly, with God all things are possible.
